Archaeology in the San Juan Islands: Then & Now

Please join us on Saturday, October 22nd, 7:30 pm at the Lopez Center for Community & the Arts

Dr. Julie Stein, archaeologist and Director Emeritus of the Burke Museum, will discuss how archaeology has changed over recent decades, since she began working in the San Juans. Dr. Stein has excavated here on Lopez, at San Juan Island National Historic Park, as well as other locations in the Salish Sea. Her research interests are in geoarchaeology, especially Northwest Coast shell middens.

During Dr. Stein’s career, there has been a shift from excavating to answer purely academic research questions, to being active partners with the tribes and other agencies in identifying significant cultural sites and helping to protect them from development and destruction. Watch the Islands Weekly for an article about Dr. Stein’s career.

We hope you’ll join us to hear Dr. Stein’s insights about the changing landscape of archaeology, and come prepared with your burning questions about archaeology in the San Juan Islands!
