“One of the Pleasantest Homes on the Island” A Genealogy of an Island Home with Eric Hall

6:30 – 8:30pm, August 22, 2024, Port Stanley Schoolhouse, 2970 Port Stanley Rd.

I love this place, and I often think that the people before me must have loved it too. I feel a kind of kinship with them, knowing each one of them would have looked out at the same view and tilled the same soil. Each one of them would have seen the moonlight coming through the same window. And, just as each person made their own mark on the place, each one would also have had their lives shaped by it. It was this feeling of shared belonging that made me want to learn the history of this place. As I wrote it, I began to think of it as a kind of love poem to it.

What started as a pandemic project in 2020 has turned into a book length exploration of the relationship between a piece of land and the people who have lived there.

Through a series of interviews and hours of research, Eric Hall has compiled a living history of the land he lives on, and its inhabitants, dating back to the late 1800s.

Come hear about his methods, a few of the stories, and some theories on why people move to, stay on, and leave Lopez.

Join Eric Hall on Thursday, August 22, 6:30PM at the Port Stanley Schoolhouse, 2970 Port Stanley Rd.
